It felt good to be on a road trip (car) once again, sort of. Hadn't driven anywhere of significance in well over a year, thank you Covid.
Wanting to avoid Austin morning traffic, I decided to depart at 8:30 AM instead of my previously planned 6:00 AM. (Six ayem? Just what the hell was I thinking?)
Anyhoo, I got on the road, all excited 'n everthang, and then nothing. Went from 75 mph to 0 mph in nothing flat. Construction AND a major wreck with do that to ya. Spent the next three hours covering only 25 miles. Ugh.
Made good time the rest of the drive, only stopping once for gas, Diet Coke recycling, and to play snatch 'n grab at a Wells Fargo ATM. Made it to the Speedway by 3:00 PM.
Donned the hat, grabbed some cards, put on the day pack and started the 3/4 mile walk to the speedway infield. Too much cement, too much sun, too much heat. Gotta love Texas.
My first order of business was to find Dave of Double D Moto fame. After 10 minutes of wandering we met. Good to put a face with the name after several months of phone conversations.
Spent the next two hours wandering the grounds, being impressed with all that was there, spotted a few fellow YouTubers and planned my strategy to cover it all the next two days. Really glad I decided to stay for the duration.
All heated out, Dave, his brother-in-law and I all decided to hit Buffalo Wild Wings for some chicken parts and a cold one (or two). Tasty.
Following, I made my way to the Motel 6 and checked in. Spartan, but nice, new and clean. My type of place. Literally across the highway from the speedway and only $73 a night all in. Not bad.
Later, had a great chat with four guys from Nebraska who had driven down for Saturday's flat track race. Damned nice guys. Helped them damage some pizza and a case of beer. Did I say damned nice guys?
The Motorcycle Gene was supposed to show at the same Motel 6 around 10:30 PM. Too tired.
Sleep.
